Hi and happy summer!
It is once again time for Biofilm to reactivate and head for a photowalk! This time we are going to Vallisaari, an island located next to Suomenlinna. The photowalk will be held 29.7 starting at 17:40 from Lyypekin laituri. The island is old military base and has been open to the public for only few years. However, there are still locations on the island where going is strictly prohibited. There is an also art exhibition in the island, but it closes at 18:00, so if you want to see it, we have to take an earlier ferry.
Vallisaari is interesting mixture of nature and old military buildings and fortresses. It is known for its multiple bat species and the island is also home to over 1000 butterfly species (great opportunity to focus on macro!). Next to Vallisaari, is island called Kuninkaansaari where old military bunkers can be found. Two islands are connected with breakwater, and we can also pay a visit to Kuninkaansaari, if we want to.
We will go there by a ferry, which leaves from Lyypekin laituri, Kauppatori (Market Square) and the voyage lasts about 20-minutes. Buy the ticket in forehand and remember to use student discount (special group ticket)! Remember also take your student ID to the ferry. The ticket costs 4.25 € and you can buy it from this website https://kauppa.visitvallisaari.fi/index.php?lang=3 The ticket is two-way ticket, so you don’t have to worry about returning from Vallisaari. If you cannot make it in time, you can also choose later ferry ticket from the webshop, but you cannot change ticket you already bought for another ticket. Please inform to Biofilm if you are late or cannot make it in time.
We will meet at 17:40 at Lyypekin laituri and take the ferry that leaves at 18:00. If you want to see the exhibition, we meet with another group at 15:40 at Lyypekin laituri. Below is a map, where the ferry is located.
The weather forecast doesn’t look ideal at the moment, but we will wait and see how the situation progresses. If the weather appears to be horrible, the photowalk will be held on Thursday 29.7. instead. Also, organisers will keep an eye on the pandemic’s development and the restrictions. Changes will be made if necessary, but please remember to follow the familiar guidelines and common sense: don’t come if you’re sick or predisposed and wear a mask if social distancing isn’t possible, even if you’re vaccinated!
